…Minister Brands Zulum with Livestock Symbol
By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna
Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Co-Chair of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Committee, Professor Attahiru Jega, has praised Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, for pioneering a cattle ranch initiative hailed as the first of its kind in Nigeria.
Professor Jega made the commendation during the commissioning of the Ngarannam Livestock Improvement and Ranch Settlement in Mafa Local Government Area on Saturday. The project was developed by Zulum’s administration with federal government support.
“I must say that I witnessed something today that is unprecedented in our country. Governor Zulum’s vision, passion, and commitment are driving economic growth, uplifting lives, and creating employment opportunities. It is highly commendable,” Jega said.
He added, “Borno State’s leadership in livestock development is evident, as shown by the launch of the Annual Animal Vaccination Scheme and the provision of livestock for livelihood restoration. The creation of a Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development alongside the Borno State Livestock Management Agency (BOLMA) is noteworthy.”
Facilities Supporting Livelihoods and Security
Governor Zulum outlined the project’s benefits, highlighting that the 4-square-kilometer ranch was designed for 461 nomadic families displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency.
“In addition to a house, each family has received bulls, heifers, goats, and essential humanitarian aid,” Zulum said.
The ranch boasts facilities such as:
- Housing estates with road networks
- Schools and health clinics
- Veterinary services
- State-of-the-art dairy and beef upgrading centers
- Pasture development areas and milk collection points
- Earth dams for water supply
- Markets and security outposts
Federal Support for Livestock Development
The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, commended Governor Zulum for his innovative approach. During the event, the minister branded Zulum with the ministry’s logo as a symbol of recognition.
“I congratulate Governor Zulum on this laudable project, which will significantly benefit the people of Borno State and Nigeria, contributing to food security and economic growth,” the minister said.
Additional Ranching Projects Underway
Deputy Governor Dr. Umar Usman Kadafur, who also serves as the Commissioner for Livestock and Fisheries Development, announced that the Ngarannam ranch is one of three livestock centers being established across the state.
“The remaining two ranching centers, located in the other senatorial districts, are over 90% complete and will be commissioned soon,” Kadafur said.
He emphasized the projects’ role in promoting sustainable development, peaceful coexistence, and economic empowerment for the people of Borno State.
