Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State has expressed deep sympathy for the victims of the devastating fire outbreak at the Kara Market timber shade, which destroyed property worth millions of Naira.
Accompanied by APC leader Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Minister of Labour and Employment Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and other dignitaries, Governor Aliyu visited the scene on Saturday, conveying his heartfelt condolences over the extensive losses.
“From what I have seen here, the inferno was truly devastating. I pray that Almighty Allah will replace what the victims have lost with something better. Please accept my heartfelt commiseration,” the governor stated.
Governor Aliyu also cautioned residents to exercise caution during the harmattan season, known for its increased risk of fire outbreaks due to dry and windy conditions. He urged citizens to handle inflammable materials with care to prevent such disasters.
He commended the swift response of the Sokoto State Fire Service and good Samaritans, whose efforts significantly mitigated the damage.
The Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Barr. Nasiru Aliyu Dan Tsoho, reported that while the fire caused extensive property damage, no lives were lost.
The Governor further reassured the victims of his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, pledging support to those affected.
To address the incident, Governor Aliyu has constituted a seven-member committee tasked with investigating the fire’s causes, identifying affected traders, and recommending possible assistance.
The committee, chaired by Alhaji Dalhatu Sidi Mamman, includes Hon. Bello Idris, Prof. Musa Garba Maitafsir, retired Col. Garba Moyi Isa, and Hon. Ibrahim Hassan Chichi as members. A police representative will also participate, with Muhammad Hayatuddeen Tsamiya serving as secretary.
The committee has three weeks to submit its findings and recommendations.
The Chairman of the Timber Sellers Association expressed gratitude to the Governor and Senator Wamakko for their ongoing support and concern for the affected traders.
