Governor Zulum Advocates Chinese Model for Leadership Selection in Nigeria

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has suggested adopting aspects of the Chinese model of leadership selection to address flaws in Nigeria’s electoral system. Speaking at the 24th National Conference of the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers in Abuja, Zulum highlighted the need for a merit-based and structured approach in electing leaders across all levels of government.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Abdurrahman Bundi, Zulum explained that the Chinese model combines both selection and election. He noted, “In China, they first identify credible leaders with proven integrity based on their records. They assess the potential of those who have served in public offices over time, then select the best candidates, who are subsequently subjected to elections.”

Zulum stressed that Nigeria could benefit significantly from this model, as it prioritizes integrity and experience. He also emphasized that effective governance requires both good leadership and responsible followership, urging Nigerians to become committed citizens who support strong governance.

“Our problem here in Nigeria is not only about leadership but also followership. We need to focus on two key areas: leadership and followership. Good citizens are essential to achieving meaningful progress,” he added.

In addition to his advocacy for leadership reform, Zulum highlighted the importance of technology in revolutionizing agriculture, aiming to increase food production and sustainability in Nigeria. “By leveraging emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and biotechnology, we can develop resilient food systems that meet the needs of our growing population while protecting our resources,” Zulum said.

The governor was accompanied to the event by the APC Chairman of Borno State, Hon. Bello Ayuba; Member of the House of Representatives Engr. Bukar Talba; Elder Statesman Musa Inuwa Kubo; and the Commissioner of Budget and Planning, Dr. Babagana Mustapha Malumbe.
