Health Gist – With Joyce Remi-Babayeju

Thank God, the rains are here! The wet or rainy season as is common here, is also the monsoon season.

The cold and windy breeze that comes with the rain is often welcome, especially after a long wait. But the rain come with its health challenges like heat rash, flu and dry cough caused by dusty air, especially for children and even adults. Also, it comes with a host of water-borne diseases like malaria, cholera, diarrhea, dengue fever.

Most nights you have to practically pray to enjoy a passage of breeze because most times no air at all.

My neighbor Collins told me one morning that he had a terrible night and was almost running out to get some fresh air outside, not minding mosquito bites.

Electricity outages has become the order of the day now, No light to enjoy your fan or Air Conditioner.
Well, no comment, this is Naija.

The wet season, monsoon or rainy season comes with its weather challenges, so it is wise to pay attention to your health to stay healthy during this season.

Here are some tips to help keep healthy.

1) All stay covered and safe in the rainy season.
2) Drink plenty of water
3) Observe high-level toilet hygiene. Always wash your toilet seats and floors. Disinfect the toilet bowl once a week to keep germs away. Maintain your regular bathing habit.

4) Use a mosquito repellent. Mosquitoes usually multiply during the rains, so use insect repellent always, as mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria are rampant during the season.
Also ensure there is no open water storage in your home because mosquitoes are born in stagnant water. You may keep your windows and doors open but prevent them from entering the house.

5) Wear full-sleeved clothes but avoid
wearing cotton clothes because it absorbs water much faster. Get your clothes ironed to dry out the moisture present in your clothes.

6) If you can, avoid crowded places. This is to stay away from people with common cold during the rain. Countless people come down with running noses, colds and Cather at this period,

7) This is the mother of it all! Maintain personal hygiene and keep your surroundings clean. I would advise that you borrow the COVID-19- 19 protocols here for a good hygiene culture.

8) Make your umbrella or raincoat handy when you go out, take a shower when you come back, drink something to warm yourself, and wash or sanitize your hands carefully before you eat something.

One more thing-protect yourself from diseases during the rainy season.
See you next week.
