Here are 10 key facts about the late Raymond Dokpesi

  1. He was born on October 25, 1951.
  2. Dokpesi attended Loyola College in Ibadan for his early schooling and later Immaculate Conception College in Benin City for his secondary enpaducation. He pursued his tertiary education at the University of Benin before obtaining master’s and doctorate degrees from Wyzsza Szkola Morska Gdynia and the University of Gdansk Sopot in Poland, respectively.
  3. He started his career as a Marine Office Cadet in the Nigerian Ports Authority in 1969.
  4. Dokpesi was the pioneer recipient of a private radio broadcast license in Nigeria, establishing Raypower 100.5FM. He also founded Africa Independent Television (AIT), the first African broadcasting station to transmit to the USA.
  5. From October to December 1983, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Gongola State Government. Subsequently, he held the position of Managing Director at African Ocean Line Limited from 1984 to 1988.
  6. In 2016, Dokpesi was charged by the anti-graft agency for alleged money laundering and breach of the Procurement Act in relation to the disbursement of N2.1 billion from the Office of the National Security Adviser under Colonel Mohammed Sambo Dasuki’s leadership. However, he was acquitted and discharged by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on April 1, 2021.
  7. Throughout his career, Dokpesi also worked with various government parastatals, including the Federal Ministry of Transport and Aviation, where he served as the Head of the Water Transport Division on Secondment from the Nigerian Ports Plc between 1978 and 1983.
  8. In 2008, he received the National Honour of the Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR).
  9. Dokpesi established the first indigenous shipping line in Nigeria.
  10. He contracted and successfully recovered from COVID-19, triumphing over the global pandemic.

Raymond Dokpesi leaves behind a significant legacy in the media industry and his contributions will be remembered.
