IG Deploys Security Personnel to Rivers Amid Emergency Rule

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional security personnel and resources to Rivers State to strengthen security, protect lives and property, and safeguard critical infrastructure.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced this in a statement on Thursday, emphasizing that the deployed officers will work closely with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the state.

Police Warn Against Unlawful Gatherings

The IGP reassured citizens that while individuals have the right to seek legal redress, any unlawful protests, gatherings, or activities that threaten public peace will be dealt with decisively.

“The Nigeria Police Force emphasizes that aggrieved individuals retain the right to seek legal redress through the appropriate judicial channels. Any attempt to exploit the situation through unlawful gatherings, protests, or disruptive activities will be met with the full force of the law,” the statement read.

Citizens were urged to remain law-abiding, follow legal directives, and continue their daily activities without fear.

Security Forces on High Alert

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability, calling on residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could threaten public safety.

“Individuals or groups with criminal intent are hereby warned to stay away from Rivers State. Security forces are fully prepared to take decisive action against any threats to the peace and stability of the state,” the statement added.

Background: Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers

The deployment follows President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday. The President also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the State House of Assembly for six months.

In their place, Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (retd.) has been appointed as the Sole Administrator of the state.
