Dr. Chimezie Amadi, the Imo State Commissioner for Digital Economy & e-Government, highlights how Governor Hope Uzodinma is leveraging technology to diversify the economy, tackle unemployment, and curb insecurity.
Imo State’s strategic investment in ICT and digital technology stems from its youth-driven population, with over 70% under 35. By upskilling young people with fourth industrial revolution skills, the state is reshaping its economy. Initiatives like the SkillUp Imo program, in collaboration with Cisco and Microsoft, train youths in cybersecurity, AI, and data analytics, creating job creators instead of seekers.
This approach not only diversifies the oil-dependent economy but also tackles insecurity by engaging idle youths in productive activities. Technology has become a key tool in reducing recruitment into criminal activities, fostering peace and innovation across the state.
Imo’s recognition extends globally, with partnerships including the European Union Digital SME Alliance. Governor Uzodinma’s efforts recently earned him the Digital Governor of the Year Award, reinforcing Imo’s status as Nigeria’s digital skills capital.
By focusing on security, technological advancement, and skill development, Imo State is building a sustainable, innovative future.
