Innoson Unveils First Locally-Made Electric Vehicle

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company (IVM) has officially launched its first locally produced electric vehicle, marking a significant milestone for the Nigerian automotive industry.

Cornel Osigwe, IVM’s Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs, announced the achievement on Facebook, emphasizing the importance of this development for the country. He revealed that the electric vehicle was produced at IVM’s advanced manufacturing facility in Nnewi, Anambra State, signaling a major step forward in Nigeria’s transition to sustainable transport.

“I just test-drove the first Innoson electric vehicle produced in Nnewi. We are just getting started,” Osigwe shared.

While details about the pricing, production numbers, and commercial release timeline were not disclosed, Osigwe confirmed that the initial batch of electric vehicles has already sold out. He added that the response has been overwhelming, with hundreds of inquiries and prepayments from eager customers wanting to be among the first to own the new Innoson electric cars.

“The first set, which are few in numbers, are now completely sold out,” Osigwe said, noting the strong demand following his announcement.

Electric vehicles are crucial in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions from road transport, which accounts for over 15% of global energy-related emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The electric vehicle market has experienced significant growth, with advancements in range, performance, and variety. As of 2023, electric vehicles represent around 18% of new car sales, highlighting their growing popularity and the shift toward sustainable transportation solutions.
