The Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) Plc has expressed its condolences to the residents of Kabong Community in Jos North Local Government Area for the losses they incurred due to a malfunction of the JED facility.
Dr. Friday Elijah, the Head of Corporate Communications at JED, issued a statement on Saturday in Jos, describing the incident as deeply unfortunate. He stated, “We express our deepest sympathies to families who have encountered losses as a result of this incident.”
According to JED, the incident occurred around 3 am and was related to issues with their high-tension wires in the area. Preliminary investigations indicated that the accident resulted from a high-tension wire snapping onto the low-tension lines, leading to an excessive voltage supply.
As a consequence, the source feeder tripped off and caused an inter-trip of the transmission end source from the Makeri Transmission Station. JED assured that they would closely monitor the situation and provide accurate information regarding the unfortunate incident.
The power distribution company also mentioned that they would conduct a thorough evaluation of the root causes of the malfunction and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
A resident of Kabong, Mr. Dung Bature, confirmed the incident and reported that it resulted in the unfortunate loss of 10 lives, with the injured being taken to the hospital for medical attention. Additionally, the incident caused damage, including the gutting of some shops around the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the area.
