Former Chief Justice Mohammed Uwais Passes Away at 89

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais, has passed away at the age of 89.

A family source confirmed that the respected jurist died on Friday, June 6, 2025, in Abuja. Preparations for his funeral prayer and burial are currently underway.

Born on June 12, 1936, Justice Uwais served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. He was widely regarded for his integrity, legal acumen, and contributions to judicial reform in Nigeria.

Following his retirement from the bench, he was appointed by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to head the Electoral Reform Committee, where he led efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s electoral process. The committee’s report, popularly known as the Uwais Report, became a key reference point in discussions on electoral transparency and reform.

Justice Uwais leaves behind a legacy of service to justice, democracy, and national development.
