The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, is reportedly under intense pressure to step down, with sources suggesting she may resign as early as Monday.
This development follows the invasion of the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other armed security personnel, escalating tensions in the state.
Renowned TV anchor Seun Okinbaloye fueled speculation about the political turmoil in Lagos with a post on X, stating, “Resignation Looms in Lagos! It’s a matter of hours.”
Videos obtained by our correspondents show a visibly emotional Speaker Meranda as lawmakers chant, “Meranda we want,” in protest against the security forces’ presence at the Assembly complex.
Meranda’s leadership has been uncertain since the return of impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who continues to challenge his removal. Reports suggest that President Bola Tinubu’s intervention could pave the way for Obasa’s reinstatement, adding to the crisis.
With the political landscape in Lagos shifting rapidly, all eyes remain on the Assembly as developments unfold in the coming hours.
