Kaduna: 80 Worshippers Escape After Church Abduction as Scores Remain in Captivity

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

At least 80 Christian worshippers abducted during a church service in Kurmin Wali, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have escaped from bandits’ captivity, local authorities have confirmed.

The Village Head of Kurmin Wali, Ishaku Dan’azumi, told journalists on Sunday that the escapees have since reunited with their families after fleeing and seeking refuge in nearby communities. He clarified that while earlier figures suggested about 177 worshippers were taken during the attack, 86 people are still believed to be in captivity.

Dan’azumi appealed to the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of those still held, warning against attempts to politicise the tragedy while families continue to suffer trauma. Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said the police would issue a comprehensive report on the Kurmin Wali incident. Separately, community leaders said nine residents abducted in Kuyambana, Kauru LGA, in October 2025 remain in captivity, according to the village head, Zakka Paul.

In Yarkasuwa, Saminaka, Lere LGA, at least 13 people are also still being held following a November 2025 attack that reportedly left four people dead and several others injured, according to local elders and youth leaders. A statement by the Akurmi Development Association (AKURDA) said the victims included men, women, and children. Security agencies have yet to confirm the status of ongoing rescue operations in the affected communities.
