Kaduna Launches Bikes and Vans for TB and HIV Initiatives

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Recently, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani distributed 46 motorcycles and two Hilux vans to local government authorities. This initiative aims to combat Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV in communities across the state.

During the unveiling ceremony, the governor also introduced three new health policy documents and a public health law. He emphasized that these measures will significantly improve the lives of citizens. Furthermore, the policy documents will provide guidance for caring for mothers, children, adolescents, and the elderly.

The newly introduced documents include:

  • Kaduna State Public Health Law
  • One Health Strategic Plan
  • Human Resource for Health Policy
  • Integrated Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent, Elderly Health, and Plus Nutrition Strategy

Governor Sani stated that implementing these documents would reduce morbidity and mortality rates related to health conditions. He stressed that effectively disseminating these policies will enhance Kaduna State’s ability to tackle health challenges.

Moreover, the existing Infectious Disease Control Centre will serve as a base for One Health operations. Sani reiterated the state’s commitment to addressing emerging and re-emerging diseases affecting communities. Consequently, he said, “We will be at the forefront of the battle to tackle these issues.”

Additionally, the Human Resource for Health Policy will tackle challenges in staffing. It will ensure an adequate number of skilled health workers at all healthcare levels. Thus, he outlined plans to address health worker attrition, boost recruitment, and enhance capacity building for health personnel.

In addition, the Public Health Law will outline citizens’ rights and responsibilities concerning health and the environment. This law aims to provide legal recourse for citizens addressing violations by health workers and the government, emphasizing that public health is a shared responsibility.

As part of this effort, Governor Sani announced the distribution of 46 motorcycles and two Hilux trucks. This will aid Local Government Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Buruli Ulcer Supervisors in effectively conducting community TB and HIV case identification in Kaduna State.

Furthermore, he noted the commencement of distributing Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) purchased through a partnership with the World Bank and the ANRIN Project.

Finally, the governor expressed gratitude to the Global Fund, UNICEF, and the Federal Ministry of Health for their support in strengthening Kaduna State’s TB and HIV programs. He also acknowledged the LAFIYA Project for ensuring that the state has the necessary policy documents to adapt to the evolving health landscape
