Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has launched a new sanitation initiative aimed at improving environmental cleanliness while creating 5,000 jobs for youths and women across the state. At the unveiling of the programme, known as Operation TSAFTA, the governor said an additional 7,000 jobs would be created in the coming months as the project expands.
He said the state government had procured equipment including roll-on roll-off (RoRo) bins, dustbins, water tankers and personal protective gear to support safe and efficient waste management operations.
According to Sani, the first phase will cover four local government areas facing increased environmental pressure due to rapid urbanisation and population growth. Lessons from this phase will guide a statewide rollout.“ A clean and well-managed environment is essential for public health, economic productivity and social stability,” the governor said, describing the initiative as part of a broader plan to integrate environmental responsibility into daily governance.
He said the programme links environmental management with job creation, giving young people and women opportunities for paid, lawful work while improving public hygiene.Sani added that private waste management firms would be engaged to boost efficiency and accountability in service delivery.
He commended local councils and relevant ministries for their collaboration, noting that coordinated efforts were key to sustainable environmental management in Kaduna State.
