Kaduna State Governor Resolves Teachers’ Dispute, Releases N548m to NUT Fund

By Abigail Philip David

The Kaduna State Government has disbursed N548 million to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Endwell Fund, ending a long-standing conflict between the government and the union.

Governor Uba Sani ordered the immediate release of the funds, following negotiations that addressed issues surrounding the statutory deductions meant to support teachers during service and retirement. This resolution was announced by the acting Executive Chairman of the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mubarak Mohammed, during a press conference in Kaduna on Thursday.

Mohammed stated, “Governor Uba Sani has successfully resolved the protracted dispute regarding the NUT Endwell Fund, demonstrating his commitment to education and teacher welfare.”

The agreement includes discontinuing all related litigation and granting the NUT full authority to independently manage the fund. In addition, the Endwell Scheme will undergo structural reforms to enhance accountability and efficiency.

Since assuming office in May 2023, Governor Sani has prioritized improving education in Kaduna, focusing on access, enrollment, retention, and learning conditions in schools. Mohammed praised the governor’s efforts, describing the resolution as a testament to his leadership and dedication to justice and development.

The resolution has been welcomed by the NUT, whose Kaduna State Chairman, Ibrahim Dalhatu, commended the governor for his intervention. He emphasized that the release of the funds would significantly improve teachers’ welfare in the state.

“This is a significant milestone for teachers in Kaduna. We appreciate Governor Sani’s unwavering commitment to resolving this issue,” Dalhatu said.

The resolution is expected to foster a stronger relationship between the government, the NUT, and teachers, ultimately contributing to the enhancement of education quality in Kaduna State.
