Kano Official Returns N4.7m Mistakenly Credited to His Account

By Abigail Philip David

The Deputy Managing Director of the Kano State Refuse Management and Environmental Agency (REMASAB), Alhaji Lamin Muktar Hassan, has returned over N4.7 million mistakenly credited to his bank account by the state government.

Hassan, who initially thought the funds were his January 2025 salary, became suspicious after noticing the amount was more than 85% higher than his regular monthly earnings.

Appointed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Hassan had endured months of delayed payments before receiving his arrears in December 2024. In January 2025, however, the same amount was mistakenly deposited into his account again, without his actual January salary.

“I realized it was an error because the amount was identical to my December arrears and did not include my January salary. I immediately contacted the Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General’s Office to report the issue,” Hassan explained.

He promptly returned the full amount to the state government and obtained a receipt as proof, which he submitted to the Ministry of Finance.

Hassan stressed that returning the funds was a matter of integrity. “At the time I returned the over N4.7 million, I had less than 10% of that amount in my account and had yet to receive my January salary,” he said.
