Kano Retreat: Barau Jibrin Calls for Unity and Progress in Constitutional Reform

The Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has emphasized the importance of aligning Nigeria’s Constitution with the aspirations and expectations of its citizens. He made this statement during the Senate Committee on Constitutional Reform retreat in Kano.

Jibrin highlighted the task of considering and recommending changes that would advance freedom, equality, and justice for all. He stressed that these changes should ensure the Constitution remains a strong framework that unites Nigerians while promoting social cohesion and national unity.

The Deputy Senate President also called for synergy among key stakeholders, including senators, the House of Representatives, the executive arm of government, state governors, state assemblies, the judiciary, and civil society organizations. He emphasized that a collaborative effort is necessary to build consensus on contentious issues.

Drawing from his extensive experience as a senator representing Kano North since 2015 and a former member of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, Jibrin’s insights were well-received. His background in accounting and financial management has also equipped him to chair crucial committees, including the Senate Committee on Appropriations.

As the retreat aims to shape Nigeria’s future, Jibrin urged stakeholders to remain committed to delivering meaningful reforms that would create a stronger, more inclusive, and progressive Nigeria, reflecting the collective will of its citizens.

The Kano retreat represents a significant step toward constitutional reforms, with Jibrin’s address setting the tone for productive discussions. As stakeholders work together, Nigeria moves closer to a brighter future built on the principles of freedom, equality, and justice for all. This was also echoed in comments shared by some Kano residents in conversations with the press.
