Kano State Adopts Climate Change Policy to Tackle Environmental Challenges

By Jabiru Hassan, Kano

The Kano State Executive Council has approved a comprehensive Climate Change Policy Framework to combat environmental degradation and climate change.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the policy—championed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf—aims to protect public health, reduce emissions, and promote sustainable economic growth.

The framework, presented by Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, focuses on key sectors, including Agriculture, Energy, Health, Transport, Education, and Urban Development.

Dr. Hashim emphasized its commitment to local solutions, global partnerships, and access to climate funds.

“This policy directly addresses daily climate challenges and aligns with global best practices,” he said.

The initiative prioritizes reducing emissions through renewable energy, protecting vulnerable communities, promoting public participation, and ensuring gender-inclusive climate actions.

Governor Yusuf described the policy as central to his administration’s agenda for economic resilience and inclusive growth.

“It’s about securing a sustainable future for all residents,” he stated.

Additionally, the policy strengthens Kano State’s position to attract international support and funding, enhancing its role as a regional leader in climate action.

Dr. Hashim highlighted its function as a roadmap for a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy.

“It will guide us in building a sustainable future,” he added.

With this policy, Kano State sets an example for other regions, showcasing how local solutions and global collaboration can drive meaningful climate action.
