Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, has reaffirmed her controversial remarks about Nigeria, rejecting attempts to soften her critique. In response to Nigeria’s Vice-President Kashim Shettima‘s criticism, Badenoch insisted she would continue to speak candidly about her homeland.
Badenoch, who is of Nigerian descent, had previously described Nigeria as a “socialist nation brimming with thieving politicians and insecurity.” She emphasized that her focus is not on promoting Nigeria’s global image but addressing its systemic challenges with transparency.
A spokesperson for Badenoch stated, “Kemi is not here to do Nigeria’s PR. She stands by her words and will not sugarcoat the truth.” The outspoken leader has consistently addressed the issues within Nigeria, reflecting her commitment to addressing problems without reservations.
Badenoch, born Olukemi Adegoke, has remained critical of Nigeria’s leadership despite her deep-rooted connection to the country. She adopted the surname Badenoch after marrying Scottish banker Hamish Badenoch.
This exchange highlights ongoing tensions over the portrayal of Nigeria’s political and security landscape, with Badenoch taking a hardline approach in her political commentary.
