Kogi Govt Says Cash-Back Promotion Policy Boosts Workers’ Welfare

By Noah Ocheni, Lokoja

The Kogi State Government says its ongoing cash-back promotion policy underscores Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to workers’ welfare and pro-labour governance. The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, said the initiative ensures that staff promotions translate into tangible financial benefits, rather than remaining administrative formalities. He spoke with journalists in Lokoja over the weekend.

According to Fanwo, the policy covers civil servants whose promotions date back as far as 2007 and is aimed at clearing long-standing promotion arrears accumulated over several years. He said the exercise is designed to restore confidence in the civil service and improve staff motivation.

Fanwo explained that the Ododo administration views the cash-back payments not as a favour, but as a statutory responsibility to workers who have served the state diligently. He added that the policy aligns with the government’s broader agenda, which prioritises prompt salary payments, engagement with labour unions and improved welfare conditions.

He noted that addressing inherited arrears demonstrates the administration’s willingness to tackle difficult issues and invest in human capital as a foundation for effective governance and service delivery. The commissioner also attributed the state’s ability to fund the exercise to improved revenue inflows, which he linked to recent fiscal reforms at the federal level.

Fanwo assured civil servants that workers’ welfare would remain central to government policy, urging them to continue to perform their duties with professionalism and dedication.
