Kogi State is set to receive $500 million from the World Bank to enhance its basic education and primary healthcare services, as disclosed by the state’s Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, Honourable Asiwaju Idris, on Thursday in Lokoja.

The funding is part of the World Bank-assisted HOPE-GOV initiative, which aims to strengthen education and healthcare in the state. Honourable Idris made this announcement during a Citizens’ Sensitization Programme held at the Government House in Lokoja.

According to the commissioner, the funds will focus on improving basic education and primary healthcare, both of which are critical pillars of a productive, innovative, and resilient society. He emphasized that investing in these sectors is essential for accelerating progress and fostering inclusive growth.

Dr. Habibat Tijani, the State Accountant General and World Bank Fiscal Focal Person, highlighted that the HOPE-GOV initiative will support Kogi’s efforts to enhance fiscal transparency, improve budget credibility, and ensure accountability in the management of state funds. She added that the initiative would also improve the recruitment and performance of teachers and healthcare workers.

The Commissioner for Education, Honourable Wemi Jones, praised the initiative and commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his commitment to transforming the education sector. He noted that the current administration has allocated over ₦1.2 billion for external examination fees for primary and secondary school students.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, pointed out that the HOPE-GOV initiative will revolutionize healthcare service delivery and increase access to essential healthcare services in the state.
