Ibrahim Idoko, the National Vice-Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) for North-Central, rejected Yunusa Tanko’s claim that the Obidient Movement is more influential than the Labour Party. Tanko, the National Coordinator of the movement, had recently stated that the movement would seek alternatives if the LP resists good governance and accountability.
Idoko Criticizes Tanko’s Remarks
In a press statement released on Wednesday, Idoko slammed Tanko, labeling him a political opportunist. He accused Tanko of trying to please his backers while undermining the Labour Party’s historical achievements. Idoko pointed out that the LP had been winning elections long before the rise of the Obidient Movement.
Labour Party’s Historical Achievements
Idoko emphasized the Labour Party’s long track record of electoral success across Nigeria. He highlighted key figures such as His Excellency Alex Otti, the current Governor of Abia State, and Olusegun Mimiko, a former two-term Governor of Ondo State. Idoko also noted that the LP had National Assembly and House of Assembly members in several states, reinforcing its political influence.
Tanko’s Lack of Awareness About LP’s Success
Idoko dismissed Tanko’s remarks as a sign of ignorance about the Labour Party’s success. He reminded Tanko that well-known politicians like Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Senator Joshua Dariye, and Hon. Samuel Godday were elected under the Labour Party’s platform, further proving the LP’s continued electoral success.
LP’s Path Forward: Confidence for 2027 Elections
Despite Tanko’s comments, Idoko expressed confidence in the Labour Party’s future. Under Barr. Julius Abure and the current National Working Committee, the LP will continue to strengthen. Idoko confidently stated, “If Tanko and his allies wish to pursue an alternative path, they are welcome to do so.”
