Lagos State Shuts Down Ikeja Golf Club Over Safety Concerns

[By Abigail Philip David]

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has sealed Ikeja Golf Club, citing negligence and public safety violations.

In a statement on Wednesday, LASBCA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, stated that the action was taken following numerous complaints about safety issues at the club.

“The Lagos State Building Control Agency has acted decisively by sealing off Ikeja Golf Club on Oba Akinjobi Way, GRA, after repeated incidents raised concerns about public safety, risks to lives, and property damage,” the statement read.

The decision came after a recent incident in which a stray golf ball hit a LASBCA employee at its headquarters in Ikeja. There have also been multiple reports of errant golf balls damaging nearby vehicles, with the club allegedly disregarding repeated instructions to install protective netting or adjust play areas for safety.

Expressing disappointment, LASBCA General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, criticized the club’s management and members for what he described as a disregard for public safety.

“It is concerning to see such negligence from a reputable establishment. Persistent disregard for safety regulations is unacceptable, especially when lives and property are at stake,” Oki said.

Oki emphasized that the club’s failure to adopt preventive measures violates safety laws and reaffirmed LASBCA’s commitment to safeguarding residents and visitors from preventable hazards. He added that the club would remain sealed until it complies with required safety measures.
