Mahdi Aliyu Wamakko Nominated as Director, North West Development Commission

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

The nomination of Mahdi Aliyu Wamakko as Director of the North West Development Commission has generated debate, with some opposition members alleging favoritism. However, others argue that his selection is based on merit and qualifications.

This marks the first time a direct member of Senator Aliyu Wamakko’s family has been nominated for a high-profile position. The senator has historically focused on public welfare, often prioritizing opportunities for the masses. Mahdi’s nomination, therefore, represents a departure from this approach, suggesting that his credentials were the primary factor in the decision.

Mahdi is considered qualified for the role, which is non-political. He is expected to lead the Planning, Research, Statistics, and Management Information System Department within the commission, a position requiring technical expertise.

The National Assembly’s confirmation of Mahdi, along with other nominees—including the daughter of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje—highlights a broader effort to appoint individuals based on competence rather than personal ties.

While opinions remain divided, supporters of the nomination see it as a recognition of Mahdi’s capabilities rather than an act of favoritism.  Mahdi Aliyu Wamakko Nominated as Director, North West Development Commission
