Mainoo to Start, Dorgu Recalled as Man United’s Predicted XI Takes Shape for Aston Villa Clash

Manchester United are expected to make several enforced changes when they travel to face Aston Villa in Sunday’s Premier League encounter, according to a report by Manchester World on Saturday, December 20, 2025.

Head coach Ruben Amorim is set to reshuffle his starting line-up as suspensions and international commitments limit his options ahead of a challenging trip to Villa Park.

United will be without Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo, who are both away on Africa Cup of Nations duty, while Casemiro is also unavailable after serving a suspension following his yellow card against Bournemouth.

The absences leave Amorim short in key positions, particularly in defensive midfield and on the right flank, forcing a rethink in both personnel and balance as United chase a positive result.

The task is further complicated by Aston Villa’s formidable home record. Unai Emery’s side are on an impressive winning run at Villa Park this season and have already defeated Arsenal and Manchester City there, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing United.

In goal, Senne Lammens is expected to keep his place after a composed display against Bournemouth, where he made several crucial saves. In defence, Leny Yoro should again feature, offering versatility across the back line, while Ayden Heaven is likely to continue after a series of solid performances. Lisandro Martínez could be handed his first start of the season after patiently waiting for his opportunity.

Diogo Dalot is tipped to operate once more at left wing-back, a role he has grown increasingly comfortable in, while Patrick Dorgu is expected to be recalled on the right wing-back position following his debut on the right flank, filling the void left by Amad.

In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo may be trusted again in a deeper role despite mixed outings there, with Bruno Fernandes expected to drop slightly deeper to help control the tempo. Mason Mount should retain his place after a run of encouraging performances, while Matheus Cunha could return to his preferred attacking midfield role after previously being used as a false nine.

Up front, Benjamin Šeško appears the natural choice to lead the line following his return from injury, giving United a focal point in attack as they look to upset Aston Villa on their own turf.
