Divorced Women Highly Desired in Mauritania, Market Thrives

By   Milcah   Tanimu

In a cultural twist, divorced women in Mauritania are increasingly desired and celebrated. Contrary to many cultures where divorce carries stigma, Mauritania views it as a positive transition, with divorced women becoming highly sought after by both single and married men.

According to 2018 data, approximately one-third of marriages in Mauritania end in divorce. This cultural acceptance has led to a distinctive practice where divorced women participate in a market to sell household goods and celebrate their independence.

Research indicates that 74% of these women remarry, with some having multiple marriages throughout their lives. Mauritanian men appreciate divorced women for their perceived maturity and realistic expectations, contrasting sharply with the high demands often associated with unmarried women.

While divorced women find high demand, divorced men face challenges in remarrying, as Mauritanian women prefer those without a history of failed marriages. This dynamic underscores a unique aspect of Mauritania’s marriage and divorce culture, highlighting the value placed on divorced women within this society.
