Nasarawa Assembly Organizes Retreat for Members-Elect

“… as Speaker hails Gov. Sule for Sponsorship… ”

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly in collaboration with Multiventures Resources Ltd has organized a 3-Day Capacity Building Workshop for returning and new members of the 7th Assembly to be inaugurated next month.

The retreat taking place in Jos, Plateau State has as its theme” Legislative Practice and Procedure “also had as participants management staff and committee Secretaries of the House.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, while declaring the workshop open appreciated Gov. Abdullahi Sule for sponsoring the workshop and effective partnership as well as synergy with the legislature.

The Speaker said that the training was to educate, enlighten and equip members-elect on the legislative practice and procedures.

“First and foremost, I want to appreciate Gov. Abdullahi Sule for approving the workshop, as it will go a long way in boosting our legislative practice and procedure.

” I cannot thank His Excellency enough for the effective partnership and support to the State House of Assembly.

” It is my hope that the partnership will continue to exist throughout our tenure for the benefit of our people and for the overall development of the State,” he said.

Abdullahi called on participants to take the workshop with all the seriousness it deserves to enable them acquire knowledge on Legislative Practice and Procedure.

” I want to plead with us to set aside. all our personal engagements and pay attention to the workshop for our effective legislative duties,” he added.

He also urged the members-elect to be good ambassadors of the State in Jos while the workshop last.

” Please let us be good ambassadors of Nasarawa State throughout the workshop.

” As the workshop last, let the name of Nasarawa State be protected here in Jos, Plateau State,” he said.

The Speaker assured the consultant and all other Resource Persons of all their necessary support and understanding for the success of the workshop.

He wished members-elect and other staff successful and fruitful deliberation.

The Speaker assured members-elect of his determination to ensure that the achievements of the 7th Assembly surpass the achievements of the current 6th Assembly.

Earlier, Hon Abdulhamid Kwarra, Chief Consultant, Multventures Resources LTD said that the workshop was to impact legislative practice and procedure knowledge on the members-elect for effective service delivery.

” We are here to train and sensitize you on what you will do, if finally sworn in as members of your various constituencies,” he said.

Kwarra urged members- elect to give their maximum cooperation to the Resource Persons.

Hon Mohammed Omadefu ( APC-Keana) Hon Musa Ibrahim ( NNPP-Doma South) and Hon Hudu A Hudu ( APC-Awe North), all said that the workshop is apt and timely as it would improve on their legislative skills.

They commended the sponsor of the workshop and assured of their readiness to use the knowledge gain to enact laws and pass resolutions that would have direct bearing on the lives of the people of the State.

It would be reported that the workshop featured various paper presentations as well as questions and answers session where Hon Abdulhamid Kwarra presented paper on Legislative Practice and Procedure, Barr Anthony Akika former Permanent Secretary in the State presented paper on Supremacy of the Constitution and Principles of Separation of Power under the 1999 Constitution as Amended among other presentations.

Others are Bills and the Process of Passage into Law, will be presented by Barr Obiri Orji, Director, Legal Services, NSHA, Mr Cyril Ogah, former Director Publications, NSHA will present paper on Parliamentary Ethics and Code of Conduct, Hon Agede Auta, former member Representing Obi 1 presented paper on Issues in Executive Legislative Relationship.

Dr Ladan Nasirudeen, Senior Lecturer, Isa Mustapha Agwai 1 Polytechnic, Lafia will present paper on Dynamics of Local Government System as A Tool For Rural and Community Development and Hon Anthony Obande, former member representing Doma South will present paper on House Committee System.
