New Sports Minister’s Appointment Raises Eyebrows Among Stakeholders

By Daniel Edu

The announcement of Cross River State politician, Senator John Enoh, as the Minister of Sports Development by President Bola Tinubu has left top stakeholders in the sports sector surprised and perplexed.

In a departure from previous administrations, the Ministry of Sports Development has now been separated from the Ministry of Youth.

Enoh, a former member of the House of Representatives, is set to lead the new Ministry of Sports Development, while Abubakar Momoh from Edo State heads the Ministry of Youth.

Enoh’s background includes political roles and ownership of multiple farms, where he engages in arable and livestock production. He also operates a foundation that aids individuals with diabetes in Nigeria.

Despite his extensive political history, sports enthusiasts in Nigeria have expressed astonishment at Enoh’s appointment, asserting that he lacks a discernible connection with sports.

Frank Ilaboya, a respected sports broadcaster, shared his surprise while hoping that Enoh would defy expectations and contribute positively to the sports sector. He highlighted the need for creative solutions in sports development.

Criticism of Enoh’s appointment also spread online, with some interpreting it as an indication that President Tinubu might not prioritize the sports sector.

Veteran sports journalist and administrator Godwin Enakhena questioned Enoh’s background and experience, while others voiced their skepticism about his suitability for the role.

Shuaib Gara-Gombe, former Chairman of the Gombe State Football Association, acknowledged his lack of familiarity with Enoh but expressed the hope that he might exceed expectations.

Niran Adeniji, former President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, pointed out that having a sports background wasn’t essential for a ministerial role, emphasizing the importance of managerial skills.

Bukola Olopade, former Ogun State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, voiced optimism about a positive working relationship with Enoh, trusting that his experience in corporate governance would contribute to the ministry’s development.

Enoh’s appointment has sparked curiosity and apprehension within Nigeria’s sports community as they wait to see how he will handle the challenges of the role.
