The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reported 179 incidents of crude oil theft between January 11 and 17, 2025, across the Niger Delta region. These include 29 illegal pipeline connections and 55 unauthorized refineries.
The findings, shared via a video released by the NNPCL, highlight coordinated efforts from its Command and Control Centre, Tantita Security Agency, and other partners. Security forces in Bayelsa and Abia States repaired illegal pipeline connections and dismantled refineries producing black-market petroleum products.
In Rivers and Abia, hidden storage sites for stolen crude oil were uncovered and destroyed. However, acts of sabotage caused oil spills, including damage to pipelines and wellheads in Rivers State.
The week’s operations also led to the seizure of vehicles and boats carrying stolen crude oil and the arrest of 30 suspects, handed over to authorities for investigation.
The NNPCL emphasized its unwavering commitment to eradicating oil theft, which continues to hinder Nigeria’s ability to meet its oil production targets.
In just the first two weeks of 2025, 128 illegal refineries have been uncovered, reflecting intensified crackdowns on oil theft in the region.
