Northwest Sub-committee On Constitution Review Receives Over 45 Memorandum

By Muhammad Goronyo, Sokoto

Shortly after declaring the hearing open by the Governor of Sokoto state represented by his deputy, Manir Dan’iya and the first day of the public hearing, the northwest zonal subcommittee with Senators Sahabi Ya’u, Yahaya Abdullahi, Bala ibn Na’Allah, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir and Muhammad Adamu Aliero as the subcommittee chairman receives more than 45 memorandums.

Some of the memorandums received include that of State Police, Judiciary, Assembly, Local governments and state governments.

Explaining further, Aliero said the 360,000 Policemen cannot take care of over 200million people in the country, more are needed, adequate arrangements should be made to take care of their welfare alongside provision of modern fighting equipment then Nigerians would settle comfortably as it was.

Aliero assured the presenter of state police memorandum that henceforth, National Electoral Commission shall conduct local government elections as he can see no reason why one party can sweep/win all local councils in a state.

“We are here to collect views as we listen to the society. There are contradictions in the 1999 Constitution that needs immediate amendment. The review is a continuous work even in developed countries.

We shall continue to review until we have one standard and agreed constitution. Assured all Nigerians to come forward and make submissions, we assured them of proper representation, There is one government and therefore their must be one constitution”, averred Aliero.

He said based on what they have, The problem that Judiciary don’t have financial autonomy made judgements brail, but now when the bill is passed certainly judgements of all kinds would be delivered.

He further said that no government can condone backbiting as there are representatives right from the grassroots who are supposed to take care of their needs and complaints and forward to the appropriate channel for whatever action needed.
