NPC Flags Off 2024 Nigeria Verbal and Social Autopsy Study in Sokoto

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

The National Population Commission (NPC) has launched the 2024 Nigeria Verbal and Social Autopsy (VASA) study across the 23 local government areas of Sokoto State.

Alhaji Chiso Abdullahi, Federal Commissioner representing Sokoto State, made the announcement during a press briefing held at the NPC conference hall on Dendo Road, Sokoto.

Speaking on behalf of the NPC National Chairman, Alhaji Nasir Isa Kwarra, Alhaji Abdullahi explained that the survey aims to gather data on the causes of maternal and under-five mortality. He highlighted that the study, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, is being conducted nationwide and seeks to provide valuable information for reducing preventable deaths among these vulnerable groups.

Alhaji Abdullahi further stated that the VASA survey will support government efforts in addressing both the biomedical and social factors contributing to maternal and child mortality.

The survey officially commenced on November 4 and will conclude on December 15, 2024. During this period, data collectors will visit households to conduct interviews with family members to better understand the circumstances surrounding maternal and child deaths.

Earlier, Alhaji Malami Marafa Gagi, State Director of the National Population Commission, described the exercise as highly sensitive and stressed the need for cooperation from individuals and communities. He called on traditional rulers and community leaders to mobilize their people and raise awareness about the significance of the survey in reducing preventable deaths among children and women of reproductive age.

Alhaji Gagi also commended stakeholders for their ongoing support and commitment to the commission’s programs, urging that this momentum be maintained throughout the study’s duration.
