NSPRI Trains Agro-Processors on Post-Harvest Management, Value Addition in Kano

The Nigeria Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) has begun a two-day capacity-building training on post-harvest management and agro-processing for entrepreneurs in Kano State. The programme, organised by NSPRI, is designed to strengthen skills in value addition, food processing, and post-harvest handling to support agribusiness growth and food security.

Speaking at the opening session, the NSPRI Zonal Coordinator in Kano, Dr. Ajani A.O., urged participants to maximise the training to improve the quality and market value of their products. He noted that with declining opportunities in traditional white-collar employment, agro-processing offers a sustainable alternative for income generation.Dr. Ajani emphasised the importance of compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), stressing that food quality and safety must remain a priority in all processing activities.

Another facilitator, Oshadumo D., outlined NSPRI’s mandate and highlighted the institute’s role in agricultural research and innovation in Nigeria.Technical sessions at the training covered practical topics such as tomato processing into value-added products, production of fermented sweet potato flour, post-harvest value addition for cowpea, and strategies for moving agricultural products from farm to market. The sessions were delivered by Dr. Farida U.A., Adamson T., and Ibrahim M.A.Organisers said the training focuses on equipping participants with hands-on knowledge in processing, packaging, and product development to enhance sustainability in agro-processing enterprises.
