Nursing Mothers Praise Plateau Government, UNICEF for Child Nutrition Programme

Nursing mothers in Plateau State have commended the state government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for implementing Small Quantity Lipid-Based Supplements (SQ-LNS) to address child malnutrition. The commendations were made during a monitoring tour of selected primary healthcare centres in Jos North and Jos South local government areas. Beneficiaries said the intervention has improved their children’s health outcomes.

The SQ-LNS programme, introduced in September 2025 by the Plateau State Government in partnership with UNICEF and other donor agencies, is facilitated by the Child Nutrition Fund to reduce malnutrition among young children. Hauwa Mohammed, a lactating mother, said the supplements have helped address health challenges previously faced by her baby and called for the programme’s sustainability. Another beneficiary, Rukkayat Shuaibu, said the intervention eased common teething-related issues, while Hasiya Agwaru reported improved weight gain and general health in her child. Community leaders also welcomed the initiative.

Abdullahi Rabiu, ward head of Nasarawa-Gwong in Jos North, praised the government and partners for the programme’s impact at the grassroots level.Plateau State Assistant Nutrition Officer, Silas Nansel, said the tour was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the supplements. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to tackling malnutrition and ensuring continuous evaluation of the initiative to address gaps.
