Oborevwori Condoles Family, NUJ Over Death of Punch Correspondent Matthew Ochei

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Punch correspondent Matthew Ochei, describing it as a painful loss to the media community, Delta State, and the nation at large.The Punch correspondent Matthew Ochei died in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 43 years old. Ochei, who hailed from Ukunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, was an active member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and served as a correspondent covering key developments in the state.In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori commiserated with the bereaved family, journalists across Delta State, and the NUJ, Delta State Council over the Punch correspondent’s death.The governor described Ochei as a dedicated and principled journalist who carried out his professional duties with courage, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility to the public.

According to Oborevwori, the late journalist’s unwavering commitment to truth, public enlightenment, and ethical journalism earned him respect among colleagues and stakeholders within and beyond the media industry.“This is indeed a critical and painful moment. Delta State has lost a committed and fearless voice who informed and educated the public with professionalism and integrity,” the governor said.He noted that the untimely death of the Punch correspondent Matthew Ochei represents a major setback not only for his immediate family but also for the journalism profession in the state.“His untimely passing is a heavy blow to his family, the media community, and all who believe in responsible journalism,” Oborevwori added.

The governor extended his heartfelt condolences to Ochei’s family, friends, and professional colleagues, urging them to draw strength from their faith during the difficult period of mourning.“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones he left behind. May Almighty God grant them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and grant the soul of the departed eternal rest,” he said.Governor Oborevwori further assured the NUJ and media practitioners in the state of the Delta State Government’s solidarity, stressing the administration’s recognition of the vital role journalists play in promoting democracy, accountability, and good governance.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that improve the welfare and working conditions of media professionals, noting that the loss of experienced journalists such as Ochei underscores the need for stronger institutional support within the profession.The death of Punch correspondent Matthew Ochei has continued to draw tributes from colleagues, media organisations, and public figures, many of whom have described him as hardworking, fearless, and deeply committed to the ideals of journalism.As Delta State mourns his passing, Ochei is remembered for his contributions to public discourse and his role in keeping citizens informed during challenging times.
