Oborevwori’s Aide Urges Political Leaders to Reside in Communities for Better Engagement

By Anne Azuka

Hon. Fleming Carter, Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Political Matters, has called on political leaders and representatives to live within their communities for more effective engagement and development impact. Carter made this appeal during a reception held in his honor by Obrikpo Quarters in Akugbene, Bomadi Local Government Area, in recognition of his contributions to the political advancement and development of the community.

Carter emphasized the importance of close interaction between leaders and their constituents, stating, “The essence of service should always be towards raising the quality and standard of living of the people.”

He expressed concern over the growing trend of “diaspora councilors and delegates” who reside outside their constituencies, limiting meaningful engagement. “These representatives rarely visit their communities, making it difficult to gather the inputs needed for impactful governance,” Carter remarked.

He also stressed the role of councilors as essential grassroots leaders, highlighting the need for them to live in the wards they represent. “Just as governors are the heads of their states, councilors are the heads of their wards. Their presence is vital to elevating the living standards of the people,” he added.

Carter’s advice aligns with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, which emphasizes grassroots development. He called for immediate action to ensure that local representatives provide reliable information and engage with their communities.

Earlier, Mr. Richard Sugha, chairman of Obrikpo Quarters and the reception’s organizing committee, praised Carter for his longstanding commitment to the community. He recalled Carter’s role in securing two additional electoral wards for Akugbene in 1996 during his tenure at the defunct National Electoral Commission.

Sugha urged other leaders to follow in Carter’s footsteps and encouraged the youth to focus their energy on productive ventures that benefit the community.
