Okorocha Urges FG to Release Nnamdi Kanu in Honour of Late Ifeanyi Ubah

By Abigail Philip David

Former Imo State Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has called on the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a fitting tribute to the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Okorocha made the appeal on Monday during a night of tribute held in Ubah’s honour at the Nigerian Air Force Conference & Suites in Abuja.

Reflecting on Ubah’s legacy, Okorocha noted that the late senator had echoed a similar plea for Kanu’s release, aligning with an earlier call by the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

“Before his passing, Iwuanyanwu appealed to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Ifeanyi Ubah shared the same sentiment,” Okorocha said. He urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to relay the message to the government.

He added, “The best way to honour these great men is by releasing Nnamdi Kanu so that Ndi Igbo can reunite and heal.”

Okorocha also lamented the divisions within the Igbo community, calling for unity and reconciliation. He urged Igbos to abandon political hatred and embrace peace, drawing on the legacy of past leaders such as Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and Alex Ekwueme.

“These great leaders, who have passed on, must be wondering why Ndi Igbo continue to play the politics of hate and division,” he said. “Ojukwu and Ekwueme may have disagreed in life, but now they are united. We, the living, should follow their example.”

The event was attended by prominent figures, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and former Senate Presidents Anyim Pius Anyim and Bukola Saraki.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South Senatorial District, passed away in London in July at the age of 52. He will be laid to rest on Friday, November 22, 2024.
