One Feared Dead as Protesters Set Rivers LG Secretariat Ablaze

By Abigail Philip David

A person is feared dead following a shooting incident in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State on Monday. The cause of the shooting is unclear, but it occurred amid protests that erupted in several local governments after police ordered the unsealing of the 23 LG secretariats, which had been closed since July.

A local source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “The gunshot was heard near Bori, and people started running in all directions. A young man was shot and rushed to the hospital this morning.”

The protests have spread to other areas, with youths storming the council headquarters in Emuoha and Ikwerre LGs. In Ikwerre, demonstrators set fire to a section of the secretariat in Isiokpo, preventing workers from accessing the building. The newly sworn-in Chairman of Ikwerre was also unable to inaugurate his councillors due to the unrest.

Police eventually intervened to control the situation, putting out the fire, but not before parts of the secretariat were damaged.

In Emuoha, protesters blocked access to the council headquarters, refusing to allow the newly sworn-in Chairman, David Omereji, to assume office. The protesters argued that the candidate from the Action Peoples Party (APP), which they described as an “unpopular” party, did not deserve to win the recent election. They demanded that Dr. Chidi Lloyd, the immediate past chairman, be reinstated to complete his tenure as extended
