Mrs. Nonye Soludo, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, has expressed deep concern about the excessive consumption of sugar among Nigerians. She highlighted that globally, more than two million people die annually due to health issues associated with excessive sugar intake.

Mrs. Soludo made these remarks during the launch of the ‘Walk For Life’ program organized by the Ultimate Business Women and Farmers Association of Nigeria (UBWFAN) in Awka. She emphasized that individuals of all ages should make an effort to reduce their sugar consumption for the sake of their health and overall well-being.

The governor’s wife based her statement on research conducted by the World Health Organization and urged Nigerians to adhere to recommended guidelines to reduce mortality rates in the country.

Mrs. Soludo also acknowledged the importance of salt in food but cautioned against exceeding the recommended daily intake, as it can lead to serious health problems.

Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, the state Commissioner for Agriculture and the guest speaker at the event, encouraged Nigerians to incorporate regular exercise into their daily routines. He highlighted that just three to ten minutes of daily exercise can significantly contribute to a longer, healthier life and reduce the risk of diseases associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

Dr. Ihejiofor emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean bloodstream through regular exercise and a healthy diet.

The national president of UBWFAN, Mrs. Nkiru Nwagbo, commended the efforts of the governor’s wife in promoting healthy living as a norm in the state. She explained that the “Walk For Life” initiative is one of the many programs organized by UBWFAN to support women in business and farming. Mrs. Nwagbo stressed the organization’s commitment to not only the physical well-being of its members but also their mental strength. She believes that a healthy body contributes to mental stability and, ultimately, success in all aspects of life. Physical exercise is seen as a vital step in empowering women, including those facing vulnerability, to cope with life’s challenges and pursue their goals with renewed energy and determination.
