In a bold declaration at the Bishop Kelly Centre in Benin, Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has formally expressed his intent to run for the 2024 governorship election under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party. Asserting that nothing can impede his ambition, Shaibu, who has been in politics for three decades, urged the electorate and party members to support his candidacy, emphasizing his deep understanding of the people’s concerns.

In a live broadcast on Monday, Shaibu pledged to deliver practical governance if elected governor in 2024. He thanked the people for their support, highlighting his roots as a “home boy” and assuring that, with the grace of God, he would provide effective leadership. The Independent National Electoral Commission has slated September 21 as the election date.

Shaibu, who has served alongside Governor Godwin Obaseki for the past seven years, outlined his achievements as a former House of Assembly member and federal lawmaker. He promised to build on Obaseki’s projects, particularly focusing on strengthening the agricultural sector. Despite facing opposition within his party, Shaibu remains undeterred, emphasizing the importance of competence and experience in governance.

The announcement, initially planned at Eterno Hotel, faced disruptions from allies of Governor Obaseki, resulting in a venue change. Shaibu’s decision to run has strained his relationship with Obaseki, leading to a legal dispute that was later withdrawn after intervention from well-meaning individuals. Shaibu, currently operating from an office outside the Government House, continues to advocate for practical governance based on competence and experience.
