President Tinubu Flags Off Nigeria’s Largest Agricultural Mechanisation Drive with 2,000 Tractors

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched 2,000 tractors and over 9,000 farming implements under the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanization Programme (HEDA), marking the most ambitious agricultural equipment rollout in Nigeria’s history.

The announcement was made on Monday, June 23, 2025, via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication.

Tinubu’s Vision for Food Security

Speaking at the launch, President Tinubu recalled declaring a state of emergency on agriculture two years ago, stating that the move was part of his administration’s strategy to ensure food security and national self-sufficiency.

“Two years ago, we promised to transform agriculture through the Renewed Hope programme. Today, we begin fulfilling that promise. These modern implements will not only ease farming but also usher in a 21st-century farming era,” Tinubu said.

He emphasized that Nigeria must break free from outdated agricultural practices and embrace mechanisation as a pathway to prosperity.

“We cannot continue using 18th-century tools in a 21st-century world. This is the dawn of Nigeria’s agricultural renewal. Let history record this day as the beginning of our food sovereignty.”

Landmark Nigeria-Belarus Partnership

The newly launched equipment is part of a multi-billion-dollar agricultural deal between Nigeria and Belarus, formalised in September 2024. The initiative is designed to strengthen food production and rural economic growth across the country.

The Federal Government had earlier received the first batch of tractors in February 2025. According to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, over 30% of the equipment has already been delivered, with more shipments arriving daily.

“As we speak, over 200 containers filled with tractors and implements have landed in Lagos, and several more are en route to Abuja,” Kyari said during an inspection visit. “Today alone, five containers, each with three tractors, were received.”

Equipment Specifications and Distribution Plans

The 2,000 tractors are available in four distinct models to suit various farming conditions:

  • 500 units of 90-horsepower (2WD)
  • 500 units of 90-horsepower (4WD)
  • 500 units of 80-horsepower (2WD)
  • 500 units of 80-horsepower (4WD)

Each tractor comes with complementary farming implements, totalling 9,072 pieces, tailored for a wide range of agricultural activities.

Three-Tier Distribution Strategy

To ensure widespread impact, the federal government plans to deploy the equipment through three access models:

  1. Direct Purchase – For individuals or organisations seeking full ownership.
  2. Leasing Scheme – To provide farmers with affordable access without high upfront costs.
  3. Service Provider Model – Establishment of tractor service centres in farming communities, allowing smallholder farmers to lease equipment on demand.

The government has also secured enough spare parts to support the tractors for the next four years, and plans are in place to train youths across all 774 local government areas on machine operation and maintenance.

This mechanisation push aligns with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to transform agriculture into a viable engine for food security, job creation, and national development.
