Proper handling of chemicals key to security- Institute of Chemists

President of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, ICCN, Professor Felix Okieimen has said that proper information on the use chemicals is a veritable tool to promoting national security.

Speaking in Abuja yesterday Okieimen stated this at the 11th ICCON mandatory continuing professional development workshop for membership and fellow investiture.
He said, “To address the issue of insecurity, there is need for sensitization for the proper handling of chemicals.”

He advised Fellows of the institute to be proactive and inclusive in the activities of ICCON, in order to make visible this year’s Theme: Global chemical security: the safe use of Chemistry as an inevitable tool.

Professor Ifeanyi Williams, a guest speaker said the handling of chemicals must be regulated and there is need for Government to implement multi-stakeholders collaboration.

Also speaking, Director public Affairs, National Agency for food and drug, NAFDAC, Dr Abdulkadir Jimoh, who was among those bestowed with the Honorary Fellowship Award, said ICCON has been working with NAFDAC and other agencies on the issue of regulation of chemicals, as it is an integral part of production in every industry.

Jimoh said there is need for Government to regulate the genuine interest of the younger generation who want to study chemistry and also make the course inclusive.

He promised promised to keep working hard as a chemist to move the nation forward and thanked the institute of chartered chemists of Nigeria, bestowing on him the award of a fellow of the institute.
