The Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority (SRRBDA) has issued a public alert on the increased release of water from the Goronyo Dam following rising inflows from tributaries and recent heavy rainfall.
According to a statement signed by the Technical Adviser to the Managing Director, Abubakar Bagudu, the release has been raised from 300 cubic meters per second to 550 cubic meters per second.
The decision was necessitated by the breached Kankiya Dam in Katsina State and persistent rainfall across catchment areas, which have pushed Goronyo Dam beyond its capacity of 943 million cubic meters.
SRRBDA explained that the step was taken to safeguard the dam’s structural integrity and prevent possible disasters in downstream communities.
The Authority urged farmers and residents living along riverbanks to take precautionary measures and evacuate from high-risk areas.
It assured that SRRBDA would continue to provide timely updates and guidance to protect lives and property from potential flooding.
