Retired Police Officers Elect New Leader, Announce Planned Protest Over Pension Concerns

A group of retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) has elected a new national coordinator and announced plans for a protest over unresolved pension issues. In a statement issued in Kaduna, the union said retired Chief Superintendent of Police, Mannir M. Lawal Zaria, was elected National Coordinator following the resignation of retired Superintendent of Police, Chris Effiong.

The decision was reached during an emergency virtual meeting held on April 3.The statement, signed by union officials, said the group is concerned about delays in addressing the welfare of retired officers under the CPS. It called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sign the proposed Nigeria Police Exit Bill, which they say could help address retirees’ challenges.

Lawal Zaria, in his acceptance remarks, pledged to build on the work of his predecessor and prioritise members’ welfare. He warned that the group would proceed with a planned protest at the Presidential Villa on April 20 if their concerns remain unresolved.

He also urged Pension Fund Administrators to release outstanding pension arrears, citing delays despite multiple verification processes by retirees. The union said the planned demonstration would be peaceful and could extend to pension administrators’ offices nationwide.
