Senate to Summon FCT Minister Wike Over Escalating Kidnappings, says Kingibe

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has announced that the Senate will summon the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, in response to the increasing insecurity in Abuja.

With a recent surge in abduction cases in Abuja, Kingibe revealed during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today that the Senate intends to summon Wike and heads of security agencies to address the rising crime rates in the nation’s capital.

She stated, “When the Senate resumes, I plan that the (Senate) FCT committee specifically needs to sit with the two ministers and the security agencies for them to give us their plans concerning security.”

While expressing commendation for the efforts of security agencies, Kingibe emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan to combat insecurity in the FCT. She stressed the importance of the FCT committee, Wike, the police commissioner, and the head of the DSS collectively formulating an effective security strategy.

“I must commend the security agencies for doing something when we started to scream. But the truth is a little bit earlier, I tried to draw their attention and I was told that it was exaggerated,” Kingibe added. She highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of insecurity beyond just apprehending kidnappers.

According to data sourced from media reports and Beacon Consulting, a leading indigenous intelligence outfit, the FCT witnessed 194 attacks in 2022, resulting in 69 deaths and 152 abductions.
