By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

The Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, through its National Association of Economics Students (NAES), has held its 9th Annual Economics Lecture with a focus on entrepreneurship and job creation for graduates.

The lecture, themed “Entrepreneurship for Self-Reliance and Job Creation: Lessons for College Graduates,” brought together students, scholars, and stakeholders to explore practical strategies for empowering youths through entrepreneurship.

The Special Guest of Honour, Commissioner for Higher Education in Sokoto State, Professor Isa Muhammad Maishanu, commended the leadership of the college under Provost Dr. Umar Tambari Yabo for championing entrepreneurship. He said the initiative reflects the “9 Smart Point Agenda” of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, aimed at producing graduates who are job creators rather than job seekers.

Professor Maishanu also described the college’s Centre for Entrepreneurship as a progressive step toward sustainable youth empowerment and economic growth.

In his remarks, Dr. Umar Tambari Yabo reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to equipping students with technical and entrepreneurial skills that will prepare them for life after graduation. He expressed gratitude to Governor Ahmad Aliyu for his consistent support in advancing youth and educational development in the state.

Keynote presentations were delivered by Professor Mustapha Namakka Tukur, Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Female Education Board, and Mr. Francis Elishan, Educational Specialist at UNICEF’s Sokoto Field Office. Both speakers stressed the importance of innovation, practical education, and skills acquisition in boosting graduate employability and self-reliance.

The event also featured cultural dance performances, an exhibition of students’ entrepreneurial projects, and awards of recognition to the Commissioner and other dignitaries for their contributions to education and youth development.

Notable attendees included Kabiru Labaran, Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Scholarship Board, alongside other guests and stakeholders in the education sector.
