The Sokoto State Government has expressed concern over the emergence of a new criminal group in the state called the LAKURAWAS.

Garba Muhammad, the Director of Press for the Deputy Governor, issued a statement noting that Alhaji Idris Mohammed Gobir, the State Deputy Governor, shared these concerns while receiving participants of Course 33 from the National Defence College, Abuja, who were on a study tour of the state.

Alhaji Idris Gobir stated that the group is known to have faith-based ideals. He reported that an assessment indicated the group possesses sophisticated weapons and that their criminal activities have been observed in about five local government areas within the state.

According to him, this troubling development coincides with the state’s ongoing battle against banditry.

The Deputy Governor, however, assured that as the threat expands, security authorities are working diligently to address the emerging danger.

He further emphasized that the state government has been collaborating closely with federal security agencies to tackle the numerous threats to the lives and property of the state’s residents.

Alhaji Idris Gobir also outlined various efforts being made by the government to confront security challenges effectively.

He expressed hope that the study tour would provide valuable insights to the authorities regarding the nature of the unfolding criminal activities and offer solutions to ensure the security of lives and promote peaceful coexistence among the people.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda, noted that the college was established in 1992 as the highest military education institution in the country.

He explained that the college focuses on selecting officers from the military, police, and strategic agencies to prepare them for strategic responsibilities.

According to him, the college has so far graduated 2,982 participants, including many from 30 African and Asian countries.

Air Vice Marshal Titus Dauda added that at the end of the tour, the team would provide both an oral presentation and a written report on their study tour of the state.
