The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., has called on the Nigerian media to focus on objectivity and avoid sensationalism in their efforts to contribute to nation-building.

Highlighting the critical role of the media in shaping national discourse and holding the government accountable, Speaker Abbas emphasized the importance of upholding journalistic ethics and professionalism during a courtesy visit by the management of the Media Trust Group, publishers of the *Daily Trust* titles, at the National Assembly on Thursday. The delegation was led by the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Malam Ahmed Shekarau.

“Invest more in objectivity and professionalism,” Speaker Abbas said. “Short-term gains won’t make an organization last. It is truth and transparency that will sustain you.”

The Speaker acknowledged the value of constructive criticism, noting that it is a crucial part of democracy and governance. He urged the media to encourage responsible reporting that highlights challenges, offers solutions, and ensures balanced coverage.

Since the 10th House of Representatives was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, Speaker Abbas noted that the Green Chamber has operated with transparency, welcoming public engagement and accountability. Legislative priorities under the 10th House include poverty alleviation, law reform, security, youth and women empowerment, healthcare, and education.

He also referenced the House’s recent unveiling of its one-year scorecard, showcasing the achievements made in the past 12 months. Abbas expressed his desire for *Daily Trust* to continue supporting these efforts with objective reporting, adding that transparency and openness remain key goals for the National Assembly.

The Speaker thanked *Daily Trust* for its commitment to responsible journalism and the advancement of Nigeria’s democracy and extended a call for partnership between the media and the National Assembly to further these shared goals.

Earlier, Malam Shekarau congratulated the Speaker for his leadership over the past 16 months and welcomed the recent announcement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to confer the Speaker with the national honor of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

The GCEO stated that the visit sought to explore a media partnership with the House, particularly through Trust TV, and extended an invitation for Speaker Abbas to attend the 2025 Daily Trust Dialogue as the special guest of honor.

The Media Trust delegation included Ibrahim Shehu Adamu, COO of Trust TV; Abdullahi Mainasara, AGM of Special Projects; Haroun Saeed Malami, Head of Business Development; Stella Iyaji, General Editor; Clement Oloyede, Politics Editor, and other senior staff members.
