Oyo, Brazil to Collaborate on Black Heritage Day

The Oyo State Government is set to collaborate with the Brazilian custodian of culture, Oba Awurela, Kabiyesi Sangokunle Adekunle Alayande, on the Black Heritage Day.

The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, while receiving Oba Awurela in his office, on Tuesday, declared the Oyo state government’s readiness to parley with Brazil on promotion of culture and tourism.

Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun lauded Oba Awurela for his plans to expand the frontiers of tourism in Oyo State, using culture as a tool, which will, in turn, boost revenue in the State.

Olatunbosun shed light on the mapped-out strategies to drive tourism in the state, through cultural heritage.

He called for further international investment and cooperation to harness the state’s tourism potential.

Oba Awurela, a paternal descendant of Awe in Oyo, said their mission was to propagate the image of his paternal household and further build cultural ties between Oyo State and Brazil.

The monarch sought collaboration of the Oyo State Government in the celebration of Brazilian Black Heritage Day, otherwise known as ‘Searchie November’ which is a yearly celebration to commemorate Brazil’s freedom from the Europeans.

Speaking further on the existing cultural integration, Oba Awurela said Brazil and all Diasporans in South America have an Academy that integrates religion and cultural heritage.

He spoke on the plan to create the Oyo Empire in Brazil, which will be known as ‘OYOTEDO’.

  • Brazil in drab draw with Ecuador to end Group B campaign

Brazil in drab draw with Ecuador to end Group B campaign

Brazil finished their Copa America Group B campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Ecuador on Sunday.

With their place in the knockout stages already secured before the clash at the Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico, Tite opted to make 10 changes.

From the side which beat Colombia three days ago, it was only team captain Marquinhos that kept his place.

Eder Militao put the Selecao ahead shortly before half-time, but Ecuador improved after the break and deservedly sealed a point through Angel Mena.

Brazil will take on the fourth-placed team in Group A in the quarter-finals on Friday, while Ecuador will play the winners of that group a day later.

The much-changed Brazil starting eleven struggled in the early stages, only testing Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez through Gabriel Barbosa inside the opening 20 minutes.

Lucas Paqueta steered an effort wide from the edge of the penalty box shortly after the midway point of the first half as Brazil started to exert more pressure on their opponents.

Their improvement was rewarded eight minutes before the interval when Militao headed home his first Brazil goal from Everton’s free-kick.

Ecuador drew level in the 53rd minute, though, substitute Mena firing past Alisson from nine metres, after latching onto Enner Valencia’s headed pass.

Substitute Vinicius Junior missed a glorious opportunity to restore Brazil’s lead in the 66th minute, skewing wide at the back post from Paqueta’s cross.

The title-holders rarely looked like finding a winner in the closing stages as Brazil’s run of 10 consecutive wins came to an end with a whimper.

Victories over Peru, Colombia and Venezuela afforded Tite the opportunity to dip into his squad for this final group game and those fringe players did not exactly cover themselves in glory.

It is unlikely many of those players will feature in the last-eight clash, with the likes of Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison refreshed and ready to reclaim their spots.

Both sides will know their opponents in the last eight after the final two games in Group A on Monday.

  • FG Bans Passengers From Brazil, India, Turkey Over Spike In COVID-19

FG Bans Passengers From Brazil, India, Turkey Over Spike In COVID-19

The Federal Government will ban entry to non-Nigerian passengers who visited Brazil, India, or Turkey in the last two weeks.

This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha via a statement issued on Saturday.

He noted that the decision followed increasing cases of COVID-19 and fatalities in some parts of the world.

Mustapha said the travel ban does not apply to passengers who have transited through those countries, adding that the travel advisory will take effect from Tuesday while it shall be subjected to review after an initial period of four weeks.

“These precautionary measures are a necessary step to minimize the risk of a surge in COVID-19 cases introduced to Nigeria from other countries,” the statement partly read.

“Non-Nigerian passport holders and non-residents who visited Brazil, India or Turkey within days preceding travel to Nigeria, shall be denied entry into Nigeria.

“This regulation, however, does not apply to passengers who transited through these countries.

“The following measures shall apply to airlines and passengers who fail to comply with I and II(a) above: airlines shall mandatorily pay a penalty of $3,500 for each defaulting passenger.”

Nigerians and permanent residents who have been in those countries in the last 14 days will have to undergo mandatory quarantine for a week in a government-approved facility on arrival, it said.

All passengers arriving in Nigeria will now have to show a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of travel rather than the previous 96 hours period.

The SGF added, “The following condition shall apply to such passengers: Within 24 hours of arrival shall take a COVID-19 PCR test.

“If positive, the passenger shall be admitted within a government-approved treatment centre, in line with national treatment protocols.

“If negative, the passenger shall continue to remain in quarantine and made to undergo a repeat PCR test on day 7 of their quarantine.”

According to the guidelines, passengers arriving in Nigeria from other destinations must observe a seven-day self-isolation at their final destination.

They are also required to carry out a COVID-19 PCR test on day 7 at the selected laboratory and shall be monitored for compliance to isolation protocol by appropriate authorities.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has reported just over 165,000 cases of the coronavirus and 2,063 deaths since the virus first emerged in China at the end of 2019.

  • Martinelli likened to Brazil legend Ronaldo as Campbell lauds ‘sensational’ Arsenal starlet

Martinelli likened to Brazil legend Ronaldo as Campbell lauds ‘sensational’ Arsenal starlet

Gabriel Martinelli has been likened to Brazil legend Ronaldo by former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell, with the Gunners considered to have a “sensational” talent on their hands.

Those at Emirates Stadium were given a glimpse of what the 19-year-old is capable of during his debut campaign in English football.

The talented teenager was expected to be eased into the fold following a 2019 switch from Ituano.

He was very much a rough diamond in need of polishing, with Arsenal moving quickly to ensure that they would be the ones to benefit from obvious potential.

Martinelli settled quickly in new surroundings, though, and was able to earn regular game time under Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta, as well as a new long-term contract.

A productive first season in north London delivered 10 goals through 26 appearances, with his progress only stunted by an unfortunate injury.

Martinelli was laid low prior to competitive football entering a state of coronavirus-enforced lockdown in March.

He has not been seen since, as he works his way back from a serious knee injury, but could return before the end of the calendar year.

Campbell is among those looking forward to seeing the youngster step back onto the field, with his early outings for Arsenal seeing him follow in the footsteps of an iconic countryman.

“I think Martinelli is the one, I really do,” former Gunners frontman Campbell told Football Insider.

“Martinelli was sensational when he came in last season.

“He is a real handful – strong, direct and reminds me of the Brazilian Ronaldo. The way that he picks up the ball and runs at goal is phenomenal.

“I am not saying that he is Ronaldo but he reminds me of him, especially with that goal he scored at Chelsea.

“[He’s got a] big future but I do not want to put too much pressure on him because he suffered that injury and he needs time to come back and get his feet under the table again, get comfortable and play games.

“Players tend to get long-term injuries and then come back and pick a niggle up somewhere else. He will need time to get back into the swing of things.”

Martinelli’s last outing came against Portsmouth in March, with an unfortunate setback preventing him from figuring in FA Cup and Community Shield successes for Arteta’s side.
