**Labour Party Factional Leader Addresses Accusations of Supporting Bola Tinubu**

    By Daniel Edu

Lamidi Apapa, the factional national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has responded to allegations of supporting President Bola Tinubu and clarified the party’s internal crisis. In an interview with BBC Yoruba, he stressed that he has not received financial support from Tinubu, contrary to popular belief.

Apapa challenged those accusing him of affiliating with the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate to provide evidence for their claims. He also made it clear that he voted for Mr. Peter Gregory Obi in the February 25, 2023, presidential election and has no issues with Obi.

Addressing the accusations against him, Apapa expressed his frustration, saying, “What I am angry about is that some people accused me of working for President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. As of now, Tinubu has never provided me with financial support, although that may change in the future. The truth is, I do not support him. My vote in the election was solely for Mr. Peter Gregory Obi.”

He posed two essential questions for those believing he supports Tinubu: “First, will I assist him in garnering more votes after the election? Second, am I the presiding judge in Peter Obi’s lawsuit against him? These are critical questions to consider.”

Regarding Peter Obi’s decision to join the Labour Party, Apapa expressed his enthusiasm about the move, viewing it as an opportunity for the party to lead the country and gain more visibility. He also acknowledged the hopes of long-time party members for such a development.

In response to the party’s internal crisis, Apapa explained that a legal case in a federal high court in Abuja led to an injunction instructing Barrister Julius Abure and three other prominent party members not to act as leaders of the Labour Party. However, they did not comply with this directive, resulting in a dispute at the presidential election tribunal. Apapa emphasized that there is no evidence supporting the claim that he agreed to support Tinubu’s candidacy.

The appearance of a factional chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Lamidi Apapa at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on Wednesday in Abuja was greeted with boos and jeers as members of the party in the camp of the National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure taunted Apapa.

The incident occurred outside the Appeal Court, venue of the Tribunal sitting at the nation’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Apapa was chaperoned out of the premises by a policeman amid the loud boos of party members.

Earlier, a drama ensued as the Tribunal resumed pre-hearing of the petition of LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi against the President-Elect, Bola Tinubu.

The disagreement between the two camps of the Labour Party on which group should be in court happened just when the Tribunal commenced sitting.

Apapa, who also attempted to occupy the seat reserved for Abure, was resisted by some members of the party. The scuffle happened in the presence of Obi.

The Tribunal refused to take an appearance for the LP as the two camps presented representatives.

Justice Haruna Tsamani noted that if two persons are making an appearance for the party, they will not be put on record.

The Tribunal adjourned the matter till May 19, 2023 for continuation of pre-hearing.

Lamidi Apapa Seeking To Scuttle Obi’s Case In Court – LP

The Labour Party, LP, has raised the alarm alleging that the self-acclaimed chairman of the party, Lamidi Apapa, has approached the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, asking it to dismiss all the cases filed by the party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh made this known in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement, LP urged the tribunal to disregard the “antics” by Apapa, saying they are out to destroy the party and satisfy their alleged paymasters.

“We are by this statement informing all arms of the Judiciary, including the tribunals and courts to ignore the ignoble antics of these compromised suspended members of the party. We are also calling on the police, DSS and EFCC to arrest these enemies of democracy.

“Approaching the tribunals to withdraw all the cases lodged by Labour Party candidates across the board is the height of subterfuge and treachery, and Nigerians will resist this ploy to plunge the nation into unnecessary turmoil,” he said in a statement posted on the party’s official website.
