    9 Corps members Test Positive for COVID-19 in Niger

    No fewer than 9 members of the National Youth Service Corps deployed to Niger state have tested positive for COVID-l9, investigations have revealed.

    Our Reporter learnt that the corps members were discovered to be positive after tests carried out on them when they reported for the two-week orientation programme at the Paiko temporary orientation camp.

    It was learnt that those affected had already been placed in isolation in one of the government facilities in the state.

    The development it was gathered stopped those concerned from passing out with others on Tuesday after the two-week orientation programme.

    They are doing fine in the isolation centre, ” a top official of the State Task Force on COVID-19.

    No official of the State NYSC directorate was prepared to volunteer information officially on the development, however when contacted the state Commissioner for Information Alhaji Mohammed Sani Idris confirmed the development, saying that the relations of the affected Youth Corps members have been informed.

    The Commissioner also confirmed that the Task Force on COVID-19 in the state had begun the fumigation of the House of Assembly complex following the discovery that the Speaker Abdullahi Bawa Wuse and Clerk of the Assembly Alhaji Abdullahi Kagara tested positive for COVID-19 recently.

    No fewer than eight members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)  posted to Wailo orientation camp in the Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi have tested positive for coronavirus.

    Also, two more persons have died of suspected yellow fever, raising the number of deaths so far recorded at 10 since the disease outbreak last week.

    Information Officer of Bauchi Primary Healthcare Agency, Ibrahim Sani, disclosed these in a statement.

    He said chairman of the agency, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, has instructed a surveillance team to carry out sample collection and investigation of all corp members undergoing training in the camp to avoid de-escalation.

    He added a holding room has since been allocated by the State Director of the NYSC for those that are suspected to be positive cases.

    On yellow fever, the statement said Commissioner of Health and the Executive Chairman of the agency have activated various response teams of state and local government level.

    It stated further it has also conducted series of meetings to underscore the magnitude of the emerging new cases.

    NYSC: 5 corps members test positive for COVID-19 in Abuja

    Mrs Walida Isa, the Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps, Federal Capital Territory, has said that five prospective corps members have tested positive for COVID-19.

    She made this known on Monday in Abuja at the swearing-in of the 2020 Batch `B’ Stream 1 corps members.

    Isa, who did not reveal their names, said that 853 corps members were registered after they were tested for COVID-19.

    “The five that were positive were taken to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control for treatment. So they’re not among the number we registered,” Isa said.

    Recall that the 2020 Batch `B’ Stream 1A orientation resumed camping on Nov. 10 and a week was used to test the corps members on COVID-19 before registration.

    BREAKING: Buhari directs compulsory health insurance for corps members

    President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the National Youth Service Corps to ensure the enrolment of corps members in the National Heath Insurance Scheme, the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Shuaibu Ibrahim, said on Monday.

    He also assured that the NYSC has intensified liaison with security agencies for to ensure the security of corps members wherever they are serving in the country.

    Ibrahim stated this during a media chat with Bureau Chiefs, Media Executives and Correspondents which held in Abuja.

    According to him, with the annual mobilisation of over 300,000 corps members, the NYSC no doubt, “remains the most critical platform for mentoring Nigerian youths as drivers of national unity and development.”

    “I wish to use this opportunity to again express our gratitude to the security agencies and other stakeholders for their support. Furthermore, the scheme has concluded arrangement with the NHIS for the enrolment of corps members into the NHIS in line with a presidential directive. We have also expended huge resources on critical health needs of corps members, including footing of medical bills”, Ibrahim said.

    COVID-19: NCDC approves re-opening of NYSC camp in Abia

    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has approved the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Abia for re-opening ahead of the upcoming orientation activities commencing from Nov.10.

    The NCDC team led by Dr Okorie Onuka, Pillar Lead, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) gave the approval after inspecting facilities at the camp on Friday in Umuahia, NAN reports.

    Onuka said thorough assessments were carried out at the hostels, clinic, isolation centre, and kitchen

    “We have seen the hand-washing equipment and we have seen the readiness of the staff. I believe they are ready to start the camp

    “We have also added that we were going to do some training for them. If there is any suspected case they will take the sample and bring it to us,“ he said.

    He, however, commended the state coordinator and her management team for their efforts, adding that “the camp is clean and tidy.”

    Security operatives comprising officers of the Nigeria Police Force and soldiers have arrested some persons for vandalising and attempting to loot some properties of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

    Speaking at the NYSC Camp, Kubwa in the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday after the security operatives arrested the rampaging youths, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, stressed that the camp is not in possession of any COVID-19 palliatives.

    He, therefore, appealed to the youths to stop attacking NYSC camps under the guise of looking for palliatives.

    Some of the items that were carted away included mattresses, stationeries, boots and uniforms of potential corps members.

    This comes in the wake of series of looting that has occurred across the country in the past couple of days, even as miscreants hijacked the #EndSARS protests.

    Across the country, major malls, shops, private businesses and even vehicles have been burnt down – prisoners have escaped from jails, following what started as peaceful protests, demanding an end to police brutality and extrajudicial killings, as well as better governance in the country.

    The looting of warehouses storing COVID-19 palliatives, first started in Lagos – part of an aftermath of shootings that occurred on Tuesday at the Lekki Toll Gate area of the state.

    Viral videos on social media showed people packing out bags and cartons of the palliatives which were ought to have been shared by government to cushion the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy.

    Nearly one week after, the lootings have intensified across other states with many slamming the government for ‘hoarding for months’ what could have helped Nigerians cope through the hard times of the pandemic.

    The state governments, on the other hand, have come out to say the palliatives were not hoarded but rather saved for vulnerable groups of the society.

    The National Youths Service Scheme, (NYSC) has directed its State Coordinators to liaise with security agencies in their respective states to beef up security presence to ward off potential attacks on the camps by hoodlums who might be invading them in search of hidden COVID-19 palliatives.

    The Katsina state coordinator of NYSC, Alhaji Yahaya Ahidjo said that the measure has become necessary in view of the growing attacks on NYSC orientation camps already recorded in FCT, Cross River, and Adamawa states.

    He said ’’yes it’s a directive from our headquarters, asking state coordinators to liaise with security agencies in the state in order to beef up security in their orientation camps.

    “As you can see we have already deployed the Police, Army, and other security agencies to our orientation camps in case of any eventuality or attack on us.

    “The hoodlums appear to be targeting COVID-19 isolation centers and possibly warehouse locations for palliatives.”

    When the Nation visited the NYSC orientation camp located at Mani road, Katsina, contingents of Soldiers and Police force were been deployed to guard the main entrance and the premise of the orientation camp.

    Meanwhile, the camp has stepped up preparations for its reopening for orientation activities by November 10, with a visit by NCDC officials to certify its level of compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

    FG Reveals date for reopening of NYSC orientation camps

    The Federal Government has approved the reopening of all camps where the National Youth Service Corps orientation exercises hold on November 10.

    The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, made this known in a tweet on Thursday.

    He tweeted, “The Resumption of the NYSC Orientation Camp for prospective Youth Corpers has been approved and opens on November 10th 2020. Full COVID-19 Protocols will be enforced.”

    The Federal Government had ordered the closure of the NYSC orientation camps nationwide over coronavirus fears on March 18.

    NYSC gives update on reopening of orientation camps

    The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has insisted there is no official date for the reopening of camps.

    This was contained in a statement signed by the NYSC’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Adenike Adeyemi, in Abuja on Saturday.

    Adeyemi described reports that the orientation course will resume October 27, 2020 as fake.

    “It is imperative to state that the Scheme has ensured that all the COVID-19 safety protocols incidental to safe hosting of Orientation programmes are in place in all its 37 Orientation Camps.

    “Note also that some precautionary safety measures already adopted by the Scheme had earned it the commendation of the PTF,” the statement read.

    The NYSC expressed hope the Federal Government will soon give approval for the full resumption of camping.

    “While the NYSC sincerely appreciates the patience so far shown by the PCMs who have waited for over six months to be called-up for participation in the Scheme, it equally empathizes with them over the unanticipated disruption of their programmes, resulting from COVID-19 pandemic,” it added.

    Two corps members, Miss Ilori Ayotola Deborah and Mr. Ilozumba Patrick Chiagozie have been offered automatic employment by Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for their outstanding performance during their one- year mandatory service.

    The batch B 2019 corps members were commended for exhibiting “consciousness and selflessness” during their one year mandatory service. They also bagged ministerial award in recognition of their immense contributions to rural communities, especially during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic.

    The statement released by Austine Elemue, the Special Assistant on Media to FCT Minister of State Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, read; 

    “Nobody will hear about you if you choose to carry out your normal duties but you must do extraordinary things to be treated extraordinary.

    “The Governing Board finds you worthy for this honour, and I have no doubt in my mind that you deserve this award after listening to your citations.

    “You are indeed outstanding. When I listened to the citation of Ilori Ayotola Deborah, I was really proud of a young beautiful lady who is selfless and committed to duty.

    “The administration will therefore continue to appreciate those who have worked harder to promote the unity of this country.

    “The period of youth service, ushers you into a completely new environment, new culture, new faces to cohabit with and understand and learn from each other.

    “Once again, we appreciate you for your outstanding performance and to inform you that there is always a space for you in the FCT Administration.
